The Key Advantages Of Painted Kitchen Cabinets

When it comes to kitchen cabinets, homeowners generally fall into one of two camps. Either they want painted cabinets, or they want cabinets with a natural wood finish. Those who favor a natural finish often say it looks more rustic, is easier to match with their other decor, and costs less. These are all true benefits of natural cabinets. But painted cabinets have their advantages, too! Here's a look at some of those advantages.

They give you a convenient way to add a pop of color

So many kitchen elements are neutral and natural. Stone counters, for example, are almost always natural colors like gray and black. Stone tile flooring is neutral, and while painting your walls a bright color is an option, it's a little too overwhelming a choice for most. That leaves you with cabinets. If you want to add a pop of bright color, choosing patented cabinets is a way to do it. You can use neutral tones for the rest of your kitchen decor to tone things down a bit.

They allow you to use MDF and other specialty board products

Natural wood cabinets have to be made from wood. And wood, as a cabinet material, does have some shortcomings. It's expensive, and it expands and contracts a lot as humidity changes. MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, is an engineered material that doesn't experience these issues. If you choose painted cabinets, you can go with MDF. Nobody will know your cabinets are not natural wood because they are painted.

They can be repainted

If you've already started to shop for cabinets, then you know how expensive they can be. If you replace yours now, you don't want to have to do this again for many years! If you opt for painted cabinets, you can always re-paint them if you grow tired of their look in a few years. Paint them a different color, and your kitchen will have a whole new look. While you can technically paint over natural finish cabinets, doing so requires a lot more work. A lot of these finishes don't bond well with paint and will need to be removed before you paint the cabinets.

Painted cabinets are not for everyone. But if you like a bright look, want to use MDF, and think you may want a different kitchen look in a few years, painted cabinets can be the way to go for your kitchen.
