Three Roofing Problems That Can Be Repaired With Roof Sealant

Roof sealant is a versatile material that can be used during the installation of a roof or to help with roofing repairs. Roofing sealant is an adhesive coating that adheres to the damaged roofing material and fills in cracks, gaps, or holes, essentially repairing the damaged roofing materials. Roofing sealant can be used to fill in a small roof leak for short periods of time, such as until the weather improves and the roof can be more extensively repaired. But there are other long-term repairs that sealant can be used for as well. Here are three roofing problems that can be repaired with roof sealant.

Cracked Shingles or Tiles

If you look at your roof and notice that you have one or more cracked shingles or tiles, the cracked shingle or tile needs to be repaired. If the shingle or tile is not repaired, water can seep through the crack, damaging the layer beneath your exterior roofing material. Eventually, this can lead to a roof leak. Roof sealant can be spread over the crack, creating a protected layer over the crack, much like tape does for a tear in paper.

Loose or Damaged Flashing

Another roofing repair that can be made with roof sealant is repairs that are needed due to loose or damaged flashing. Flashing is commonly found around items that protrude out of your roof, including chimneys, vents, and plumbing stacks. If the flashing is loose or damaged, roof sealant can be used to re-adhere the flashing into place or repair small tears or punctures.

Nail or Fastener Holes

The final type of roofing problem that can be solved with roof sealant is nail or fastener holes. Sealant can be inserted into small holes caused by nails or fasteners. As the sealant is applied, it naturally expands as it hardens, filling in the holes and acting much as a tire plug does for a flat tire.

If you have tiles or shingles that are cracked, have flashing that is loose or damaged, or have small homes in your roofing materials caused by nails or fasteners, roofing sealant can be applied to help correct the damage. While you can purchase roof sealant at home improvement stores, it is not the same grade of sealant that roofing professionals use. As such, you should not attempt to complete roof repairs on your own. Instead, you should hire a professional roof to complete the repairs. Reach out to a company like Williams Home Center if you are in need of roofing system repair.
